How does one... Differentiate?

DIFFERENTIATION refers to teaching in a way in which you conciously REGONIZE & ACT on the reality that

students learn differently...

Differentiation:

  • Switches the instructional focus from COMPETITION among ALL students to a student competting with SELF.

  • Allows for small grouping and one-on-one teacher/student interaction to occur, instead of whole class instruction dominating.

  • Acknowledges ACCOUNTABILITY.

  • Engages students as PARTNERS in learning who share the responsibility of being active participants in learning and assessing growth.

DIFFERENTIATION is NOT intended to:

  • Lable students

  • Require students to dutifully complete tasks designed for inclusion in the grade-level curriculum, regardless of individual readiness, learning profile, interests, or dispositions for learning

  • Generally, assign the same learning task for all students to complete. (The contrast is shown the degree of difficulty experienced by different students to complete.)

  • Punish the accelerated students by giving them busy work
